Presenting: Acorn Design

Having worked as a freelance designer for almost 20 years, Nina Bäckström has now launched her own products in the brand Acorn Design. She finds her inspiration in classic Scandinavian design from the 1950s. The patterns and colour scheme really put you in that retro mode! Read her story below.

Tell us about your background!
My name is Nina Bäckström and I have been working as a graphic designer/art director in my company Acorn Reklam & Design since 1999.

What’s the story behind your brand?
The idea of making my own products have been on my mind for quite a long time. I have always had a passion for patterns and started to make sketches for Notebook covers two years ago, resulting in 3 Notebooks that I launched in December 2015.

What inspires you to create?
I pick up inspiration from Scandinavian furniture from the 50s and colours from the beautiful Swedish archipelago and nature. I collect my products under the registered trademark Acorn Design.

It is important for me to find companies to work with that share my interest to produce environmentally friendly products. All my paper- and interior design products are produced using, for example, paper marked with the EU Eco Label or FSC-marked wood. I have also designed a box for my coasters that is made out of recycled Swedish paper.

What are your plans and dreams for the future?
I have more patterns on the go in my sketchbook, and my plan is to launch a collection of products with a children’s theme next year.
