5 questions for Alvina Illustration & Design

Tell us about your background!
I have always enjoyed creating, drawing and painting. My dream job when I was little was to become an artist and much of my artistic creativity comes from my mom which when I grew up always had a creative project going on. I am educated at Gävle Art School followed by a degree in Information Design with focus on illustration at Mälardalen University. Over the years I have had a number of art exhibitions with my acrylic paintings. Even though painting is still dear to me, the illustration with ink and watercolor has grown to be what I like to do the most. For the last 10 years I have worked in advertising and communication as a graphic designer, digital designer and illustrator. In order to give room for, and develop my own ideas, I started my company and web shop Alvina Illustration & Design in 2016.

What’s the story behind your brand?
I love to create artwork with contrasting situations and emotional modes; Dreams and everyday life, humor and melancholy, the small and the big. I would like to live in the floating cities I illustrated, wander around the trees and plants and meet the cute, and perhaps a little bit scared, figures that emerge on the paper as I sketch.

What inspires you to create?
I find inspiration everywhere. In people, nature, colors, expressions and feelings. In fairy tales and in everyday situations. Above all, inspiration comes naturally when I sit down and start working on an idea or in the planless sketching with pen and paper.

What made you decide to start your own company, and what do you like most about it?
An illustration challenge on Instagram 2015 gave me the push I needed to daily set aside time for my own illustration ideas. During the challenge, I developed and refined my own style and also created my first products when peoples interest for my illustrations grew. What I like most about having my own company is to come up with new ideas for my designs, and to be able to decide what to spend my time on. I’m also very happy when people like what I do.

What are your plans and dreams for the future?
I hope to be able to continue implementing and developing all the ideas for designs that I have and that my business may grow. I want to continue to create new and imaginative illustrations and see how my little characters evolve. It feels very exciting!
